Can coffee be spiritual?

Hello Magical Souls,

I used to have a complicated relationship with coffee.

Obviously I love coffee.

I love the ritual of drinking coffee.

I love the way it makes me feel afterwards.

And I respect the power of coffee by not drinking too much coffee (2 cups per day, 3 if it’s a special day or the coffee is very weak).

And when I found the Ko-fi platform, where people can offer you a coffee in exchange for content, I was thrilled to have something that resonates with me: it feels like we are girls meeting up for coffee speaking about Angels, exchanging news, and getting each other inspired …

But … there was a time when I was ashamed of drinking coffee.

Do you remember around 2012 when Doreen Virtue, whom I was following and learning from at the time, went into a crusade against coffee (and/or coffee addiction)? She wanted us to detox from coffee which she was blaming for the stress that most people feel in their daily lives, and in turn the state of the world, and why people cannot find peace. She was encouraging us to let go of stimulants such as coffee, alcohol, drugs, etc., especially for us Lightworkers, saying these would interfere with our Soul paths. And many also shared their views that coffee is un-spiritual, has a low vibration, hinders your spiritual growth, and lowers your ability to connect with the Angels.

Some say coffee weakens your sacral chakra.

Some say coffee is giving you energy but you should only turn to God for energy.

Some say coffee is a drug that can alter your consciousness and therefore turns you away from God.

Some say only the addiction to coffee is bad as any other addictions (i.e. alcohol and drugs) and turns you away from God.

Some says coffee is a tool to increase your productivity, and as you get so focused on getting work done, you are deterred from seeking more spiritual pursuits, therefore it is bad.

And here I was, in Bergen (Norway), around 2012, with a newborn, with a husband who would leave 3-5 weeks at a time on an offshore oil platforms, trying to keep it together. I was alone the whole day with my baby. I had no friend or family in Bergen.  And the nurse who would follow us up would tell me: “I know this is new for you. But you need to go outside everyday with your baby to breathe the fresh air. Even if it is raining. Even if it is snowing. Even if it is -5ºC outside. Go out with your baby for your mental health and his physical health.” So I would oblige myself to leave the house after lunch, get a coffee outside, see people, breath the fresh air, and come back. Coffee was the only good thing about going out in the dark, icy, extremely windy city. And suddenly Doreen wanted to take it away from me.

I was ashamed.

I was a bad Lightworker.

I tried to replace coffee with tea but it was not the same.

I needed coffee for my mental health and my physical health.

But I also wanted to deepen my connection to my Angelic guides and follow my path as a Lightworker.

So I came at a crossroad and had a choice to make: do I continue to shame myself into renouncing coffee? Or do I embrace what I apparently cannot change and actually brings me joy, makes me feel good, and help me get the job done?

I choose the second road.

And guess what?

I started meditating and doing Angel readings for myself and others with a cup of coffee. And it helped.

[But I do not usually have coffee during Angel healing for some reason. I like the peace and quiet of the night like a healing cave I would go into to perform healing.]

Then, I started noticing Angel signs and messages in my coffee (see below).

And then I remembered my own mother would get spiritual insights after drinking coffee. Every week,  after lunch, she would do the dishes, and then sit down in the veranda with a cup of coffee and have a peaceful, quiet moment to herself. We, kids, were strongly advised to be quiet and not disturb her. And she would nod off for a dozen minutes or so. And sometimes she would suddenly wake up and write down the messages she had received during her liminal time. “Your uncle is a snake!” – she shouted one time just before our uncle tried to steal our part in our grandfather’s heritage.

It would seem as if coffee would help us get spiritual insights …

So can coffee be spiritual?

Coffee was first discovered in Yemen and soon was used in Sufi monasteries during the 15th century to help Sufi monks stay focused and alert during night meditations. By the 17th century,  coffee spread to Europe and was used by Christian monks and priests to stay alert and focused during services and long night vigils. At the same time, coffee houses opened a little bit everywhere in Europe and became a place of socialization, exchange, and cultural enlightenment as many were frequented by poets, philosophers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, artists, writers … therefore linking coffee with enlightenment, advances, sharing new ideas and concepts. Coffee today is still used to socialize. For ex. at the Uni we had “coffee mornings” where everybody got together and shared what advances they made on the research they were working on.

As coffee helps awaken the mind and body, coffee can be seen as symbolically awaken us spiritually. But can coffee actually help you connect to your Angels and spiritual guides?

Some say coffee can open you up spiritually by increasing your heart rate and blood flow therefore stimulating your heart chakra, where you receive spiritual insights. Coffee also allows for better energy flow within the body while grounding you therefore helping you reach higher spiritual realms while still very much grounded.

Coffee also helps with digestion and therefore may help in digesting energies present in your environment, therefore helping you flush out toxic energy you might have absorbed from others or your environment. And of course coffee helps with mental focus and awareness if you need support to do longer meditations or other Soul explorations.

I remember my friend Christina from Switzerland (from https://www.angelsandtheakashicrecords.com/) was saying that while visiting Hawaii she had never felt so abundant and connected to the Divine Feminine in her life and that every time she would prepare some Kona coffee, as soon as the aroma would fill her in, she would be drawn back to this place and time and her entire energy would shift and be filled with so much abundance and Love for the Universe. And Christina would use Kona coffee to lift her energy up prior to doing some Soul work. Coffee is connected to wealth and abundance through its importance in trade and it is used in some abundance rituals.

The ritual of preparing coffee can also be spiritual as coffee goes through a chemical transformation from coffee beans, to grounded beans, to cherished liquid, mirroring how we also go through an alchemical process of spiritual growth, of death and rebirth, of transformation …

So should you drink coffee to see Angels?

Humm no!

I don’t know … because I don’t know you.

The truth is we all have different types of body, different types of energy system, nervous system, digestif system, mental state, etc., and all evolve as you age. If you already know coffee has a bad effect on you, don’t force yourself to drink coffee so you can connect to your Angels. Your path to connecting to your guides and higher realms of consciousness is unique to you! You have a unique Soul essence and your way to reconnecting to your Divine self is personal and unique. You can be inspired by others but you don’t have to let their opinions of your path become the truth.

What I know is that your Angels are already guiding you and supporting you in deepening your connection to them if that is something you want or even need without consciously wanting it.

What I know is that some people are using drugs like ayahuasca for divination and shamanic journeys and I contemplated it for a while but I never felt called to it and I respect that. The Nahuatls in Mexico use the Peyote cactus, magic mushrooms, bindweed seeds, and tobacco for their shamanic practices and even though I lived in Mexico for 8 years, I never felt the call. And I respect that. Chocolate is another plant used in spiritual practices such as cacao ceremonies aimed at opening your heart chakra. And again, even though I was invited to some, I never felt the call. And I respect that.

But for some reason coffee did call me! And so far we work well together until maybe one day I receive a different message …

What I know is that my Angels have warned me multiple times about what can raise my vibration and what can lower my vibration so much that it starts affecting my physical and mental health. For ex. they warned me about using drugs or alcohol, about soft-core porn, about trash TV, and more … See My (Angelic) Drug Talk post.

What I know is what my Angels told me during my first pregnancy: the message was crystal clear that my baby was requesting me not to drink coffee while I as pregnant with him. But during my second pregnancy my baby allowed it.

So trust that your guides will be very clear, and as loud as you want them to be, when it concerns your health, your happiness, your path, and your spiritual growth while still giving you a choice. You can know for yourself what is good for you and what is not. Trust your own path!

Anything can be used as a distraction from your spiritual path, from your facing your shadows or your pain, from answering the call from your Soul. It can be giving yourself too many chores, too much social media and TV shows, loosing yourself in books and movies, extreme sports, giving up all your energy and heart to your kids without keeping a little something to yourself, etc. None of this is bad or un-spiritual but can be used as a way to numb yourself from your heart’s calling. And if you do misuse something to numb you away, to lower your vibrations, your Angels will lovingly call you out and make you aware.

But do not feel ashamed if you are a spiritual seeker and still drink coffee. There are many of us.

The number of times I have read: if you eat meat how can you call yourself an empath/a earth angel/a healer?

Is this gatekeeping spirituality?

What if I don’t like yoga?

What if I don’t wake up at sunrise to meditate?

What if I drink wine on the weekends?

What if I do unspiritual things that make me happy?

Can we agree to give people some freedom to discover who they truly are, and what brings them closer to their Divine self and what doesn’t – without judging or shaming – as long as they don’t hurt others?

RECLAIM your inner knowing!

RECLAIM your inner power!

TRUST your own path!

Personally, what I learnt about this experience is: I don’t want anymore people feeding me my own story …
